Interviewing Successfully as an Art

Approaching an interview without any anticipated responses is just wasting your time -- be prepared. Here are a few helpful hints to increase your chances of creating the right impression:

  1. Learn as much as possible about the company before you go for the interview.

  2. Prepare GREAT questions that will express interest and intelligence.

  3. Review how you will present yourself and emphasize those aspects of your background that will be of value to the company.

  4. Review how you'll present and package the negative aspects of your background in a positive light.

  5. NEVER complain about your present or previous employer.

  6. Possible ways of explaining reasons for leaving:

"I left due to high turnover, which was a result of poor morale."

"I left for a better opportunity."

"I left because there was not enough work to keep me busy."

Remember - It is not only what you say but also how you say it.

  7. Possible ways of expressing interest:

"I'm very interested in the job. When can I expect to hear from you?"

"I am enthusiastic about what I’ve heard. What is the next step?"

  8. Avoid discussing benefits and salary requirements. Contact your Logix consultant.

  9. Avoid "yes" and "no" responses. Give brief explanations.

  10. Immediately following every interview, send a brief note to the company expressing your appreciation for their time.

  11. Make a good first impression. (Your first could be your last.) Present yourself confidently with enthusiasm and precise answers. Of course, conservative attire ideally a suit is always required.

Pitfalls of the "Counteroffer" or "Buyback"

You have accepted an offer from a new employer. Upon giving notice to your present company, they tell you they don't want you to leave. They have great plans for you; and as a token of appreciation, a salary increase is made---you have been given the "Buyback" or "Counteroffer". Before this happens, you must consider the following:

  1. Ask yourself: If you were worth "X" dollars yesterday, why are you suddenly worth "Y" dollars today? Consider this: Your present employer could be merely "buying time" until they locate a replacement. The reason you are made a counteroffer is because they need you. When this situation is rectified (and they will see that it is), your position in the company will not be strong, and you will be expendable.

  2. The company may feel that they have been "blackmailed" into giving you a raise. Consider this: If your company really recognized your worth, they would have given you the added income or advanced position without your leaving.

  3. Realize that you are a marked person. Consider this: The likelihood of promotion is extremely limited for someone who has given notice. You will always be considered disloyal. Statistics show that of all persons who accepted buybacks from their companies, 80% were not on the job six months later. When economic slow-downs occur, you could be one of the first to go. You indicated intentions once before, so it's only natural that you may be eliminated in a period of downsizing.

  4. You may feel flattered if your company has extended a counteroffer, but is more money going to change everything in your present job? Consider this: What were the reasons you wanted to change in the first place? Does the counteroffer really offset these reasons? Has anything changed? Remember the new opportunity (you will be giving up) that looked so favorable when you accepted it.

We strongly urge you to carefully think over all these facts before making a final decision. It is your career, your livelihood. One important mistake could be costly in terms of your professional growth.
